Was sind Gumiho?
Im Koreanischen heißt sie Gumiho (구미호), im Chinesischen hulijing (狐狸精) und im Japanischen kyūbi no kitsune (九尾の狐), also neun-schwänziger Fuchs.
Was macht ihn so “gefährlich”?
Er ernährt sich von menschlichen Lebern.
Klingt so weit nicht besonders appetitlich. ^^
Kumiho aus My Girlfriend is a Gumiho und
Lee Yeon aus Tale of the nine tailed.
For this blog entry we will first start with a definition.
What is a Gumiho?
Have you heard about it before?
It is an East Asian fairy tale/ mythical character that is called Gumiho (구미호) in Korean, Hulijing (狐狸精) in Chinese) and kyūbi no kitsune (九尾の狐) in Japanese.
Basically, the term means „nine-tailed fox“.
Besides this tailed form, those foxes also turn into humans, most of them women.
So yes, the nine-tailed is a shapeshifter.
What makes it so “scary”?
It eats the livers of humans!
Doesn´t sound that appetizing at all, right? ^^
Nine-tails are mostly depicted as evil, but as we know, even from German fairytales, the fox is a really intelligent and cunning animal.
Because of that, there were times in East Asian culture and history, where the nine-tails were worshipped.
In most representations of the nine-tails, their goal is to turn human and for that they have to spend a long time, sometimes even a few thousand years, without eating humans.
East Asia-Fans will know the nine-tail from dramas and anime.
The most famous nine-tails is, without a doubt, Kurama, he is the nine-tail living inside Naruto (from the anime of the same name). Other well-known nine-tails are Kumiho from My Girlfriend is a Gumiho and Lee Yeon from Tale of the Nine tailed.
Of course we don´t just want to talk about the nine-tailed fox, we also want to show you our best of selection of dramas and anime in which it appears.

You will even encounter the nine-tailed in hit US series like Lovecraft Country (HBO). Korean variety lives off the "Gumiho" theme, it is used for example in Running Man.
Zum guter Letzt ein Klassiker! Last but not least a classic drama!
