After so many entries about drama, animes and other related topics, we are going to wander off into a completely different direction: Mascots. And yes, you read that right! The world of mascots is our current topic.
Mascots are everywhere, but why are the especially present in Japan and Korea? Compared to other countries, for example in Europe, those mascots in East Asia represent marketing and nation/city branding strategies. They can be used by cities, towns, schools, universities, the government, sporting events and brands in general. Which means that they are ubiquitous.
In most cases, mascots are cute animals or fantasy creatures that carry something with them which represents their “brand” – sometimes, these mascots also repeat specific gestures or moves. Many have even become stars! There are social media channels, merchandise and magazines dedicated to them – everything a mascot fan can wish for!
This proves that they are not just cute as hell 😊 but that a mascot is created with design, strategy, and economic calculations in mind. That´s how the difference between mascot “cultures” can be easily explained.
There´s a special term for mascots in Japan: Yuru-chara. Since 2010, there is even a „Yuru-chara Grand Prix“, a competition in which the favorite Japanese mascot is chosen via voting.
Winners from previous years can be found here: https://www.yurugp.jp/en/
“Mascot-parades” are everywhere in Japan, the Koyangi Team even encountered one of them in Kyoto.^^
We love those mascots, they are really funny and, in our opinion, should keep appearing in shows. A huge laughter is guaranteed, especially because of their adorable appearance!
Below is our ranking for the best mascots 😊 You´re going to notice the variety and inventiveness of the East Asian mascot culture!
