Ostasiatische Unternehmen: Lotte

Was haben Goethes „Das Leiden des jungen Werther“ und das fünftgrösste koreanische Unternehmen (solche Konzerne werden auch Chaebol genannt) gemeinsam? Den Namen Lotte 😊 

Charlotte ist eine der Figuren aus dem genannten Roman und der Gründer Lottes war so begeistert von diesem, dass er sein Unternehmen nach ihr benannt hat. Gegründet wurde Lotte zwar in Tokio (1948), aber von einem Koreaner namens Shin Kyuk-Ho. Daher ist das Unternehmen, trotz all der Abspaltungen und Tochterunternehmen, südkoreanisch. Lotte ist multinational tätig, daher findet ihr in ganz Ostasien Produkte, ebenso in anderen Weltregionen. Achtet mal darauf, wenn ihr in einen „Asia“-Laden geht, ihr werdet bestimmt Produkte mit dem Markennamen finden. Lotte hat z.B. in den folgenden Ländern Sitze: China, Polen, Neuseeland, Indien, Kasachstan, Pakistan, USA und UK. 

Wie ist Lotte so riesig geworden? Nach der Gründung 1948 hatten Japan und Korea ihre diplomatischen Beziehungen noch nicht wieder aufgenommen. Erst in den 60ern entstand daher in Südkorea die Lotte Confectionery Co., Ltd.. Lottes erste Produkte waren dabei Kaugummis 😊 Das Unternehmen wird seitdem parallel in Japan weitergeführt. Dieses Chaebol (familiengeführtes Unternehmen) überstand interne familiäre Auseinandersetzungen, es kamen später Skandale hinzu (z.B. im Jahr 2016 eine Anklage wegen Bestechungsgeldern), aber Lotte behält weiterhin die Position als eines der wichtigsten Unternehmen des Landes.

What do Goethe´s novel „The Sorrows of Young Werther” (German: „Das Leiden des jungen Werther“) and the fifth biggest Korean conglomerate (also called chaebol) have in common? The name Lotte! 

Charlotte is one of the central characters in that novel. Lotte´s founder was so fascinated by Goethe´s work that he called his conglomerate after her (hence "Lotte"). The company was created in Tokio in 1948, but by a Korean called Shin Kyuk-ho. Because of that, Lotte remains in South Korea, even though it is split into several subcompanies and firms. Lotte is also a multinational company, which is why it sells products all over East Asia and in other world regions too. The next time you step into an “Asia” store, you will surely notice some products by Lotte. The company has also branches in countries such as China, Poland, New Zealand, India, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, the USA and the UK. 

How did Lotte become a conglomerate? After being founded in 1948, there were still some issues to be solved, because Korea and Japan had not reopened their diplomatic relations. Only in the 1960s did Lotte Confectionery Co., Ltd. appear in South Korea. The first products were chewing gums 😊 The company is still managed in South Korea and Japan at the same time. This Chaebol (a company mostly led by one family) has had to deal with conflicts between family members, huge scandals (for example in 2016, due to bribery), which has not stopped Lotte from remaining one of the most important South Korean companies.
